How Do You Verify If You're Buying From an Actual Manufacturer vs. a Trader in India?

India has a large valve export market, and not every company that lists itself as a "manufacturer" online actually owns a foundry or machine shop. For buyers, this distinction affects pricing, quality control, lead time, and who is actually accountable if something goes wrong.

Why This Distinction Matters for Oil & Gas Buyers

A trader sources finished or semi-finished valves from multiple manufacturers and resells them, often without direct control over casting quality, testing, or material traceability. A genuine manufacturer controls the process end-to-end — from raw material procurement through machining, assembly, and testing — and can produce documentation to prove it.

Questions to Ask: Manufacturing Facility, In-House Testing, Export History

Ask directly: Where is the manufacturing facility located? Can you name the specific casting or forging process used in-house? Is hydrostatic and seat testing done on-site or outsourced? A real manufacturer answers these questions specifically and quickly; a trader tends to give vague or evasive answers, or redirects to "our production partner."

Checking Registration Details

Cross-check the company's Udyam/MSME registration, GST number, and Import Export Code (IEC) against public government databases. A manufacturing entity registered under the correct industrial classification is a stronger signal than a trading company registered purely for import-export activity.

Site Visits and Virtual Factory Audits

For significant orders, request a factory visit or, if travel isn't practical, a live video walkthrough of the machining floor, casting/forging area, and testing bay. A manufacturer with nothing to hide will generally accommodate this; reluctance is itself informative.
