The fastest way to separate a reliable manufacturer from a risky one is to check what standards and certifications they actually work to, not just claim to.

Why Certification Matters in Oil & Gas Valve Sourcing

Certifications are not paperwork for its own sake. They are proof that a valve has been designed, manufactured, and tested against a repeatable, third-party-verifiable process. For EPCs, refiners, and process plants, this documentation is usually mandatory for vendor approval and insurance compliance.

Key International Standards to Check

  • API 6D / API 600 / API 602 / API 609 — design and manufacturing standards for ball, gate, and butterfly valves used in pipeline and process service.
  • ASME B16.34 — pressure-temperature ratings for valves used in petroleum and allied industries.

Material and Traceability Certifications

For sour or corrosive service, NACE MR0175 / ISO 15156 compliance confirms the metallurgy resists sulfide stress cracking. Equally important is full material traceability — a manufacturer should provide EN 10204 3.1 or 3.2 mill test certificates tracing the raw casting or forging back to the heat number. Without this, you have no way to verify the valve body is actually the alloy grade specified on the tag.

Red Flags When a Supplier Can't Produce Documentation

If a manufacturer hesitates to share certificate copies, cannot name the testing standard used for a specific valve, or offers to "arrange" documentation after the order is placed, treat this as a warning sign. Certification should exist before the sale, not be generated to close it.
