What Quality Checks and Testing Should You Ask For Before Placing a Valve Order?

 A valve that passes visual inspection can still fail in service if it hasn't been through the right testing regime. Buyers who ask specific questions about pre-dispatch testing — rather than accepting a generic "quality checked" assurance — get far fewer surprises after installation.

Why Pre-Dispatch Inspection Isn't Optional

Once a valve is installed in a live process line, correcting a manufacturing defect means an unplanned shutdown. Pre-dispatch testing exists to catch shell porosity, seat leakage, and material mismatches while the valve is still on the factory floor, where fixing them costs nothing close to a field failure.

Hydrostatic and Pneumatic Shell/Seat Testing

API 598 governs the standard testing procedure for valve inspection, covering shell test pressure, seat test pressure, and permissible leakage rates by valve class. Ask your supplier for the hydrostatic and seat test certificate for the specific valve serial numbers you're purchasing, not a generic type-test report from an earlier batch.

Positive Material Identification (PMI)

PMI testing, typically done with a handheld X-ray fluorescence analyzer, confirms the actual alloy composition of the valve body, bonnet, and trim against the specified grade. For sour service or exotic alloys, this is the single most effective check against material substitution.

Non-Destructive Testing

Depending on criticality, ask whether radiography, dye penetrant inspection, or ultrasonic testing was performed on castings and welds to detect internal porosity or cracking that visual inspection can't catch.

Third-Party Inspection Agencies

For critical or high-value orders, insist on witness or third-party inspection through an accredited agency (TPIA) before dispatch. This adds a small cost and lead time but gives an independent verification layer beyond the manufacturer's own quality department — particularly important for first-time suppliers or large-diameter, high-pressure valves.
