Types of Cryogenic Valves: Ball, Gate, Globe, and Check Valves for LNG and Industrial Gas Service

Not every valve type adapts equally well to cryogenic service. Once you understand the extended-bonnet design principle, the next question buyers ask is which valve type fits their specific line — isolation, throttling, or backflow prevention.

Cryogenic Ball Valves

Ball valves are widely used for cryogenic isolation duty because of their quarter-turn, bubble-tight shutoff. In cryogenic designs, the ball and seat materials are selected for low-temperature toughness, and the valve typically includes a vent hole or cavity relief feature to prevent pressure build-up from trapped liquid expanding into gas within the closed cavity.

Cryogenic Gate Valves

Gate valves remain a common choice for full-bore, on/off isolation in LNG and industrial gas pipelines where unobstructed flow and minimal pressure drop matter. As with all cryogenic valves, they require the extended bonnet and appropriately selected trim materials to handle the temperature differential.

Cryogenic Globe Valves

Where flow needs to be throttled or regulated — rather than simply stopped or started — cryogenic globe valves are the standard choice, offering better control characteristics than ball or gate designs at the cost of a higher pressure drop.

Cryogenic Check Valves

Check valves prevent backflow in cryogenic piping systems, protecting pumps and compressors from reverse flow damage. Spring-assisted designs are common in cryogenic applications to ensure reliable closure even with the thinner, lower-viscosity fluids typical of liquefied gases.

Bellows-Sealed Options Across Valve Types

For applications handling hazardous or high-value gases such as LNG, hydrogen, or liquid oxygen, bellows-sealed variants of ball and globe valves are often specified to eliminate stem packing as a potential leak path entirely — an added cost that's frequently justified by the fugitive-emission risk it removes.
